The Russian love of colour, pattern and exuberant decoration is well known but in this apartment on the granite-lined Fontanka river embankment in St Petersburg, a Scotsman has interpreted Russian style in a less frenetic way. The owner, Johnny Stuart, who died in 2003, was a leading scholar of icon painting (holy paintings that ‘served as windows on eternity’) with an international reputation, and an expert on all aspects of Russian history and culture. John's house is now home to his sister.

Built in about 1800, in a village 8 miles from the French Normandy coast this elegant brick manoir is the very essence of French country living. The interiors were semi-derelict and the grounds were filled with ruined farm sheds when in late 2003, Hamburg interior designer Peter Nolden bought the house. Bricked-up windows were reinstated and all the plumbing and electrical wiring was replaced. Nolden salvaged every possible item he could re-use and found much of the original decorative panelling could be repaired.

The Rough Luxe Hotel in WC1 is situated in a Georgian side street directly across from St Pancras International Station. Looking like a cross between a tiny boutique hotel and an art gallery, it boasts distressed walls, contemporary art and reclaimed furniture.
On its website the hotels describes itself as: "Half rough, half luxury. A little bit of luxury in a rough part of London. A little bit of rough in a luxurious London". The nine-room hotel was created out of the remains of one of the area's many guesthouses. While it was under renovation, layers of paint and wallpaper were peeled off the Grade II listed hotel's walls. Pleased with the mosaic type effect this produced, designer Rabih Hage decided to stop there and leave the walls as they were.

Young Anglo-Danish couple, both architects, converted this Georgian terraced house in North London into a stylish and comfortable family home. Light and space were maximised and the furniture is a mix of family antiques and 20th century Danish and European classics.

Famed for their extravagant collections and their high-concept catwalk shows, the radical Dutch designers Viktor and Rolf have taken the fashion world by storm over the last fifteen years.
The centrepiece of The House of Viktor and Rolf exhibtion at the Barbican Art Gallery is a 6-metre-high doll's house. Populating the house are some fifty specially designed dolls, each about 70 centimetres tall and wearing an exquisite, hand-made perfect replica of a signature Viktor and Rolf piece.The dolls are even made up and have their hair styled to look like the model who first wore the clothes at the catwalk show or photo shoot.

Visitors to Southern India can enjoy a luxurious voyage of discovery thanks to a veritable 'palace on wheels' - the Golden Chariot. This five-star train transports tourists between sites of cultural and historic interest throughout the Indian state of Karnataka.
While the neighbouring states of Kerala and Goa are firmly established on the tourist trail, Karnataka is only just entering the mass consciousness of international travellers. With poor roads, no real air access and only limited hotels the state has remained largely untouched.
However, the Golden Chariot is now opening up this area and revealing its many wonders, all of which are encapsulated under the region's "One State, Many Worlds" slogan. And the concept of exploring India's heritage sites from the opulent surroundings of a train that comes complete with its very own spa is proving increasingly popular.
The Golden Chariot's journey begins in Bangalore's Yeshwanthpur railway station before it embarks on a seven day tour that winds its way through Karnataka, stopping at some of its impressive heritage sites, and eventually finishing in Goa.
